It’s May and graduation announcements have been making their way across the country to mailboxes. The question on everyone’s mind: “What are you going to do next?” For some this is a question you've known the answer for since the fourth grade. For others, this is a terrifying place of options--trying to nail down that one thing that will give you life, meaning and possibly a paycheck, can feel like a slippery and fleeting vision. This discernment can be a challenge to folks fresh out of high school or college and those who have long since graduated.
Hands down I remember this as one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made--choosing to spend a year in service following graduation, rather than finding a job. This is 100% counter-cultural and not encouraged by anyone (mostly because no one has heard of it). Conversely, I can tell you without hesitation that this one decision, that led to a thousand other decisions, changed the trajectory of my life for good.
I'm sharing at Blessed Is She today about a less traditional option after high school graduation/college graduation/retirement. If you're curious or know someone who might be, hop over and share!
